Blog Assignment 7: Privacy Scavenger Hunt

Senator Rockefeller Questions Whisper About Privacy Practices

There is an app called "Whisper App" where people can share their thoughts with the world and was labeled as the "safest place in the internet". It turns out that was all a lie these people can actually locate the exact place where the person who shared his/her thoughts is. Even if the user had requested not to be located. Even going as far as to setting up a place in the Philippines to review user when in fact in the privacy policy it had said all information was stored in the United States. This just shows that a person cant trust anybody and any franchise even if they guarantee that the information will stay private.

EPIC Recommends Research on "Privacy Enhancing Technologies"

EPIC has recommended privacy enhancing technologies and a Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights. An effort to limit the collection of personally identifiable information. Examples being identity theft, security breaches, and financial fraud. The white house has accepted these recommendations. I think it will be great if they can improve their security so that frauds, thefts and security breaches never happen again.

EPIC Obtains New Documents About Lack of Student Privacy Enforcement

EPIC has obtained new documents reveling that parents and students have filed complaints about the misuse of education records. This being rightfully done so because its possibly a violation of the federal student privacy law. Where schools and districts cant disclose a students personal record without the students consent. Personal information should never be disclosed without the consent of the person whatever reason it might be for doesn't matter.

Blog Assignment 4- Blogrolls

What I have been reading so far in the blogs I had posted, are updates on those certain situations. For example the Ray Rice article I had posted there is now information on how he has been released from the team because of the trials and hitting a women is just not acceptable, so he has been released by the Baltimore Ravens. The article on Stephen Tulloch talks about the recovering from the injury   after getting injured  while celebrating a sack. I had also posted an article  on Accounting which talks about how successful people have been in their careers after getting a degree in Accounting. The last article I had posted was about online education which talks about the pros and cons of taking online education instead of classroom education.

Blog Assignment 6: Privacy

Four online services that I use are Facebook, UHD Blackboard, Yahoo mail, and Google blogger. They have many different options as far as the account security or privacy settings. Facebook has options such as making my profile private, public, viewable to only friends. It also has an option to block unnecessary tagging from people in your friends list. I can also deactivate my account any time I want to if I don’t feel like I’m going to be using for a while. The UHD blackboard allows me to make my email, address, phone number private so that I am the only one that can see this information. I can hide my name off the roster so that only the teacher can see my name and no one else. Google blogger has a setting where I can check all the previous records as to when I have logged and if any log in timings are not accurate, I can file a complaint. Yahoo mail has a privacy option in which if I suspect that someone else logged in, I can set up a secondary log in verification. Or change my password so that it doesn’t happen again. I feel that Facebook has the most privacy settings and  the best one is the setting to deactivate when you’re not using it and then being able to activate again when you want to use it. UHD blackboard has the worst since there are not a lot of privacy setting options.

Group Progress Report

Group Progress report

What role is each group member assigned to in the group?

Sajid Ali:

Will be researching on what online education is and how it differs from a regular in school teaching environment. He will look up information online on reliable sources with up to date information that is true about the topic.

Tajmina Aakhi:

Will try to find whether or not online education is actually beneficial or just a waste of time, depending on the research she does about people who have taken online classes.

Hamza Malik Tariq:

Will find the pros, and cons of online education. He will try to find what may be beneficial for people who are interested in online education and how it could be a setback and not help person at all when he finally does decide to learn in a classroom and not in his own household. Depending on what he/she has learned.

Specific research:

Many people have tried to go through online education to get their degree but we want to find out if they have been successful in actually getting that degree. Some questions in mind are the level of difficulty compared to what a person learns in school and if the intellect one receives from actually having a face to face interaction and what somebody learns just by reading online. Our motive is to research and find as much information as we can which is true about the topic and not out dated or false. It's very important for people to understand if online education is right for them and if the level of education is as great as what one gets to learn in class. We will also talk to people who have taken their education online and hear how it has benefited them or effected them after they have transitioned into a real classroom environment.

Sources:

We will try to find information online from sources like Wikipedia and other online websites. Also books which have a connection with the topic at hand which is online education. Newspapers which almost always have data regarding online education.

The Life of the Chinese Gold Farmer by Sajid and Tajmina

The Life of the Chinese Gold Farmer

The article and video revolves around Chinese people working twelve hours a night, and seven nights a week in a small computer room where there are over 80 employees, trying their luck at playing online video adventure games in which they earn points for killing creatures. They make 10 Yuan or $1.25 American Dollars when they collect 100 coins. They turn in all of these coins to the supervisor who sells those coins to online retailers living in western nations like United States and other European countries around the world. After that, the service owner hand over your account name, password and about $30 to Chinese player/labors. Therefore,this online game is like a online business through which Chinese players makes money. According to Teitou, Owner of the game workshop, War craft is like a service industry. He realized that exporting virtual items through the internet is the same thing as Chinese labor to America. In conclusion this is a gaming business all over china where there are many workshops such as what Teitou owns. Its a business that earns over $80,000 a year. So this is not just a game but a productive business that develops the Chinese nation overall.
